Chapter Fifteen

It was almost morning by the time Zephyr and I finished talking over what we knew. There were clearly gaps and memories that were fuzzy from the passing of time, but it made me feel more sympathy toward these elves. They had been cut off from another realm against their will, and they wanted to see if the people and ancestors they’d cared about had survived.

Part of me couldn’t blame them for wanting that, but they weren’t going about it in a way I agreed with. I planned on seeing if some attitudes could be changed. And if not, I was about to learn something.

After getting up and tucking Sen into my jacket where she could see but go unnoticed, I went to the door again and banged on it.

“Okay,” I yelled loudly enough that I’d have woken anyone on the other side if they were sleeping. “Tell whoever you need to that I want to talk. If Zephyr or I are to open anything, I want more info.”

There was silence, so I yelled it a couple more times and then sat. I was lightheaded and my throat was parched, a dull ache in my head, but I would have to cope. I tried not to think about it, not wanting Zephyr to pick up on how I was feeling and worry about me.

I can tell you’re hurting, remember. It hurts me too. And Sen. Zephyr’s words made me wish I could shut him out and spare him, if only for a short while.

The elves knew exactly how to impact us. It was going to be hard to resist their demands and get out.

We can work out how to make sure this never happens again once we’ve gotten you out, but for now, don’t worry about me. I can handle a headache, and from up here, I can see for miles. I’ll know if the cavalry arrives.

I asked Zephyr to tell me another story—a happier one. I closed my eyes, trying to rest until someone came to us. I didn’t know how long I’d have to wait, but I planned on conserving as much of my energy as I could.

Despite having not eaten or drunk, I felt better. My abilities were slowly getting stronger, not that I planned to do anything yet.

Time drifted past and I was pretty sure I dozed again. I heard Zephyr’s gentle, soothing voice in my head each time I woke up. I wasn’t sure if he stopped talking or persisted while I was drifting. I could tell he was lonely and was trying to shield me from his emotions, but as he could feel my pain, I could feel his anxiety and sadness.

Eventually, there were footsteps outside again. I scrambled to my feet, not wanting to appear to be in any hardship. I’d see what I could get out of this conversation.

The door swung open, and instead of revealing Chris or the gnome who had stolen my hairbrush, an elven woman stood before me. She was wearing a dress and a robe, the style almost medieval, and she had a circlet in her hair.
